Slano

The first beautiful town we stayed in was about 45 minutes west of Dubrovnik, in a small little town called Slano. I had stumbled across a hidden gem called Villa Almadria, where we would spend our first 4 nights immersing ourselves in the sights, tastes and beauty of the Bay of Slano, along the Adriatic Sea. Thanks to our beautiful friend and villa owner, Alma, she started our trip off on the perfect note by having a beautiful lunch prepared for us including fresh langoustines, avocado & fish pate and a Croatian stuffed pepper that was out of this world while we sat on the sun deck looking out on the gorgeous bluegreen water.

From there we took bikes to cruise around town, put our toes in the Croatian sand, then ate dinner at a lovely restaurant called Tony’s, which sat on the hilltop overlooking the Bay of Slano that Alma had recommended, and the restaurant even sent a driver to pick you up and take you home (now that’s what I call service). Tony cooked a 5-course meal where the only thing you had to decide was meat or fish (we went meat and it was an excellent choice). Slano became our home base while we ventured out to visit Montenegro and Dubrovnik, our quite respite when we came back for a day’s long adventure traversing through countries we had never been in before. But thanks to Alma’s incredible stories of love and survival, in addition to the tranquil vibes felt throughout the entire villa, this is definitely one of the most beautiful places I have ever stayed in Europe, and I have been all over Italy, Paris and Luxembourg.

Although Slano was a bit far from Old Town Dubrovnik, we had a car and Alma also offered up her driver one night so that we could imbibe and enjoy a night out. Her villa was breathtaking, inside and out, and she welcomes you into her home in a way that truly makes you feel special. I would highly recommend looking into Villa Almadria as opposed to any of the larger hotel chains. The level of service was 5-star and no one can beat Alma’s cooking 🙂
